Anthony J. Cirone received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the Julliard School of Music where he studied with Saul Goodman, solo timpanist of the New York Philharmonic. Upon graduation in 1965, he was offered the position of Percussionist with the San Francisco Symphony under Jesef Krips and an Assistant Professorship of Music at San Jose State University. During his tenure at the Symphony, he has performed under the baton of Seiji Ozawa, Edo DeWart, Herbert Blomstedt, and Michael Tilson Thomas as Music Directors and such noted guest conductors as: Leonard Berstein, Igor Stravinski, Aaron Copland, Eugene Ormandy, Kurt Mazur, Rafael Kubelik, and James Levine.
He has recently retired as Professor of Music at Indiana University. Cirone has also been on the faculty of San Francisco State University and Stanford University. His students have gone on to hold positions in major orchestras and universities around the world. A prolific composer, he has over 70 published titles, including textbooks, 3 symphonies for percussion, 4 sonatas, a string quartet, and 7 works for orchestra. He is the Percussion Consultant/Editor for Warner Bros. Publishing Co., and the author of Portraits in Rhythm, a collection of 50 studies for snare drum. Portraits in Rhythm is used worldwide as a standard text for training percussionists in colleges and universities.
Anthony Cirone is featured in a video, entitled, "Concert Percussion- A Performer's Guide", distributed by Warner Bros. Publishing Co. He won the Modern Drummer Magazine Reader's Poll for Classical Percussionist five years in a row; is an active clinician, and is involved with research and developments for the Avedis Zildjian Cymbal Company. In 1999, he was awarded a Special Distinction Award form the ASCAP Rudolph Nissim Composition Contest for his work for full orchestra entitled, "PENTADIC STRIATIONS."
