Jazz drummer, educator, author, and percussion product designer Steve Fidyk, has earned national and international acclaim as a performer, author, and educator. He co-leads The Taylor/Fidyk Big Band (with Stan Kenton arranger Mark Taylor), free-lances with vocalist Maureen McGovern, and is a member of the Jazz Studies faculty at Temple University. He has performed throughout North America, the Middle East and the Far East in a wide variety of venues, and has appeared and presented at local, regional, and national music education conferences and conventions throughout the United States, Canada, and South America.
Fidyk has performed and recorded with Wayne Bergeron, John Clayton, Wycliffe Gordon, Tim Hagans, Slide Hampton, Sean Jones, Brian Lynch, Maureen McGovern, James Moody, New York Voices, Dick Oates, Arturo Sandoval, Doc Severinsen, Terell Stafford, Byron Stripling, Dr. Billy Taylor, Clark Terry, Tim Warfield, Bill Watrous, to name but a few. On tour with Maureen McGovern, he has performed with orchestras throughout the country, including The Cincinnati Pops, Spokane Symphony, Nashville Symphony, Plano Symphony, The Baltimore Symphony, The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. His discography as a leader/co-leader includes: Big Kids (U.S. Roots), A Perfect Match (Write Groove), and Live at Blues Alley (OA2), and he can be heard on over 50 recordings as a contributing artist.
A committed and experienced educator, Fidyk is currently a member of the Jazz Studies faculty at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Fidyk has authored: The Drum Set SMART Book, Inside the Big Band Drum Chart, Big Band Drumming At First Sight, Jazz Drum Set Independence 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4 Time Signatures, and an instructional DVD entitled Set Up and Play!, is a member of The Percussive Arts Society drum set committee, and has presented clinics, workshops and master classes throughout North America. His educational discography includes more than 75 jazz play-along volumes for the Hal Leonard Corporation and hundreds of big band demo recordings for Warner Brothers and Alfred Publications.
He is a contributing writer to the Modern Drummer magazine column Jazz Drummer’s Workshop and the Percussion Workshop column for the National Association for Music Education magazine Teaching Music. In addition, he has contributed drum transcriptions to Hal Leonard’s Drum Standards and Peter Erskine’s The Drum Perspective.
