Rudy Gowern has been involved in the drum corps activity since 1977. As a performing member throughout 15 seasons he marched with the Heightsman from 1977-1983, the Citations 1986, St. Anthony's of Revere 1987, the Boston Crusaders from 1988-1992 and aged out of the 1993 Star of Indiana World Championship percussion section winning the DCI High Percussion Award. He has finished 3rd (93) 5th (92) 4th (91) and 7th (90) at the Drum Corps International Individual and Ensemble Snare Drum Championships respectively.
Mr. Gowern was also a member of the New England Conservatory Youth Wind Ensembles and studied privately with Berklee College of Music legendary Jazz Drumset Teacher Alan Dawson. Rudy has also studied percussion from the likes of Alan Murray, Thom Hannum, Lee Beddis, Colin McNutt, Brent Montgomery, Bob Dubinski, Clint Gillespie and Dr. Thomas McCutchen.
Mr. Gowern is currently the Percussion Caption Head of The Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps. His past DCI teaching experience includes the Magic of Orlando (94, 95), the Phoenix Drum Corps (95) and the Boston Crusaders (96, 98-01). Rudy was named Percussion Caption Head for the Crusaders in 1999 and continued with that position through the 2001 season ending a 10 year run with the Crusaders. He previously served as a Percussion Consultant with the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps.
Mr. Gowern most recently served as the Percussion Director/ Arranger for Mt Juliet High School Percussion Ensemble from Mt. Juliet, TN (08-09) and King Philip Regional High School Percussion Ensemble from Wrentham, MA (05-07). He has also been an instructor, program designer, consultant and percussion arranger for many High Schools and Universities throughout the US and Asia.
Rudy is an active percussion adjudicator for the Indiana Percussion Association, the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit, the Louisiana Percussion Circuit and the Gulf-coast Percussion Circuit. He is an active clinician and Artist for Vic Firth Sticks and Mallets, Pearl Percussion and Adams Musical Instrument, Remo Drum Heads, Zildjian Cymbals, Sibelius Software and StickTape.com.
Mr. Gowern is currently finishing his Music Education Degree at Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Al. He is also on the percussion staff for the JSU Marching Southerners and Starr' Mill High School from Fayetteville, GA. He lives just outside of Atlanta with his wife Ondrea, son Paul.
Previously, Rudy was the Marching Percussion Marketing and Product Manager for the Pearl Corporation and served as the Assistant Director of Education and Artist Relations for Vic Firth, Inc.
