Rock the Fjords!
After being exposed to Elvis Presley's hip-gyrations on TV at the tender age of 5, Norwegian Zildjian-artist Thomas Jakobsen soon became obsessed with banging on the obligatory pots, pans and other circular shaped objects.
Born and raised in the dark and cold North of Norway, there was pretty much nothing else to do but smash away on his first set of drums and rhythmic noise became second nature to him.
Relocating to Oslo in 1999 to study music and pursue a professional drumming career led him through a variety of playing lounge-and Top 40 bands, jazz-trios and studio sessions before landing a drumming spot with Norwegian industrial pioneers Zensor.
His next break came in 2005, auditioning for Norwegian rococo-rockers Animal Alpha. The audition was successful and Thomas soon found himself in the US, recording drums with famed producer Sylvia Massy (Tool, Prince, Red Hot Chilipeppers and Johnny Cash) at Radiostar Studios in the small Northern Californian town of Weed. After their critically acclaimed debut-album release Pheromones, the band kept busy, touring steadily for two years and Thomas could take the long awaited leap from weekend warrior to professional drummer.
He also found time to record and tour with other 'edgy' Norwegian bands, mainly Bermuda Triangle, Surferosa and Mortiis before joining established synth-pop-quartet Apoptygma Berzerk as a permanent member in 2009.
Apoptygma Berzerk have toured vigorously throughout the US, Canada, South-America and Europe and shows no signs of slowing down.
Thomas does express gratitude being on the Zildjian roster and toward his favoured A-Custom set-up: "The Zildjians are so much more than cymbals to me, they are a musical instrument, an extention of my mind and hands and invaluable in the process of creating energy and music. These cymbals really have a magic aura all of its own!"
Thomas continues to explore new sounds with Zildjian and Apoptygma Berzerk.
Thomas can be heard with Zildjian on these recordings:
Zensor - Bunker (2001)
Bermuda Triangle - 33 rpm (2005)
Animal Alpha - Pheromones (2006)
Bermuda Triangle - Lover Computer city (2008)
