Darren Leader is a professional drummer based in Johannesburg, South Africa. He grew up playing in church, and during his teenage years had the privilege of studying with many of South Africa's top drummers and teachers. In his first year out of school he completed PIT graduate Andre Luke's full-time course and joined the band Harris Tweed, with whom he toured to the States to play the SXSW festival, and performed on numerous national tours.
In August 2008, Darren joined the group Zebra & Giraffe and embarked on their first national tour in support of their debut album, "Collected Memories". The group gained immense popularity in South Africa in a short space of time and garnered substantial radio and press coverage, thanks in part, to the 7 top 10 singles taken off of the album, and haven't slowed down since. Z&G have had the opportunity of playing alongside acts such as The Killers, Snow Patrol, Oasis and Panic! At The Disco within the first year and a half of formation. In 2009, they won the MTV African music award for "best alternative band" beating off the likes of Coldplay and Greenday. In his short career, Darren has also recorded various albums and jingles; held the drum chair in various theatre productions; played in award shows; sessioned for many other artists and bands and made numerous TV appearances. He is currently in studio doing pre-production for Z&G's second album, which is being mixed by top British engineer Cenzo Townshend (U2, bloc party, editors) and is due for international release in October 2010."Since I started playing drums, I was strangely drawn to Zildjian as a brand and I remember spending hours drawing the Zildjian logo in my school books! It's a dream to be able to play these beautiful cymbals exclusively now."
