At the age of 8, Koen started to take his first music lessons. Pretty soon he started playing drums in local rock & roll bands. In 1989, after graduating in communication sciences he started his studies at the conservatory of Rotterdam. There he played gigs with Bob Brookmeyer, Joe Pass, Bobby Shew, Dick de Graaf, Rob van Kreefeld, Ben van den Dungen, and many others. In 1993 he did an exchange program with the Berklee College of Music in Boston where he took lessons with Joe Hunt, Allan Dawson and Billy Hart.
After he got his master degree in Rotterdam (1995), he went to New York to study with Billy Hart (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz). In the meantime, Koen became active in the rock and roll scene again. He played with K's Choice from 1993 till 1994. After that he played with Jo Lemaire for 3, 5 years and did some studio work for various artists. In 1999 he rejoined K's Choice to tour Europe and the USA. He recorded the albums Almost Happy, K's Choice Live participated on the recordings for the DVD and album 10 and recently recorded the new K's Choice album.
He also recorded Notes of Tenderness for Venus in Flames, Ready To Sing and Comet for Woodface, played and recorded for Lalalover and worked freelance as a session player. A while ago he did his first project as a producer for a new band called Dearhunter. Koen Victor Lieckens also works as a bandcoach at the Rockacademy in Tilburg and as a drumteacher at the Antwerp high school for the arts.
