Percussionist, conductor, and teacher, Robert McCormick is currently Professor of Music at the University of South FLorida. An active performer, he has performed with Harry Partch Ensemble, the San Fransico Symphony and several orchestras under such leading conductors as Seiji Ozawa, Michael Tilson-Thomas and Robert Shaw. He served as principal percussionist of the Florida Orchestra from 1975-1996.
Well represented on recordings, McCormick has credits on the Artista, Columbia/Sony, GM< Continuum, Centaur, Nuema and Honeyrock labels. He has authored several articles, solos and tow well-known percussion texts: Percussion for Musicians (Belwin) and Duets for Percussion (G.Schirmer). McCormick's recent feature compact disc, The McCormick Duo: Premiers Plus One, with Kim McCormick, has received high critical acclaim.
As a clinician and director, Dr. McCormick has brought the USF Percussion Ensemble to the attention of composers and musicians all over the world. A noted teacher, many of his students have gone on to successful careers in the percussion field. The McCormick Duo was formed in 1989 and is currently in residence at the University of South Florida. The repertoire includes standard works form the Baroque through the Modern era, and the Duo regularly commissions and performs new works for flute and percussion. The McCormick Duo has been featured at the National Flute Convention, Percussive Arts Society International Convention and the International Society for Music Education.
