Growing up in Wiltshire, UK, Sam started playing drums at age 8. In 1996 he began studying with Tony Stockley who was instrumental in teaching him essential skills such as reading, styles and technique. In 1998 he joined the Wiltshire and Swindon Youth Orchestra playing all types of concert and classical music.
In 2003, Sam signed to Independiente Records with rock/blues trio Blackbud. He toured around the world, appearing at GLASTONBURY festival, 02 Wireless (Hyde Park), SXSW (Texas) and Winter Case festival in Spain. Blackbud also recorded two acclaimed albums, working with several Grammy Award winning producers including; Youth (Paul McCartney, The Verve) Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, Razorlight) David Bottrill (Peter Gabriel, Tool) and Liam Watson (The White Stripes).
In 2007, Sam moved to London and that has been his home ever since. He currently works with London quartet BABESHADOW touring with Florence and the Machine at some of the UK's most prestigious venues including Hammersmith Apollo, and The Empress Ballroom, Blackpool.
"My current set-up is a combination of K Constantinoples and Custom Special Drys. They give an incredibly textured sound without overwhelming any of the other instruments. When I'm playing in BABESHADOW I move to a slightly brighter sound with lighter, smaller cymbals."
