Al Pahanish, Jr., aka AL3, is a multiinstrumentalist, educator, composer, producer and musical director. He is widely known as co founder, writer and drummer with platinum rock group/ Dreamworks recording artist Powerman 5000 (1990-02)
Originally from Pittsburgh, Pa. and playing since the age of 4 years old, Al grew up surrounded by music. His grandmother was a singer and his mother was a local dance teacher and performer. He would accompany her on some dates as well as play various percussion for her students drill team. Fascinated with sound and music, he began to dabble with any instrument he could find, this led to studying piano, theory and composition with acclaimed concert pianist and master bassoonist Maxine Shimer, she taught externally in the U.S. centre for Trinity College Of Music, London, he studied under her for five years. Eventually winding up at Boston's Berklee College of Music for further studies in drumming, arranging and production with the likes of Tommy Campbell (Fusion), John Ramsey (Jazz), Ed Uribe (Latin), Joe Hunt(abstract concepts) and Victor Mendoza (mallet/ vibes). He would receive his BA in Percussion Performance.
While in Boston, Al had the pleasure to work with a host of great groups and players: Lunch Factor, Psychotec, Sweet Lizard Illtet, Screaming Headless Torsos with the incredible Dave Fiuczynski on guitar, Martin Sexton, Zora Young, Robert Holmes, John Zorn, Bob Moses and John Medeski. In the early nineties, Al, along with some work buddies form Powerman 5000, the word spread quickly in town and regionally. Before long, the clubs were packed and the boys were local faves. They recorded two albums in Boston before takin' the show on the road. Los Angeles, Ca. 1996 would be a pivotal year for the band, having been courted by everyone from veteran to newer labels, the band inks with upstart label Dreamworks SKG and releases an album. The band tours the world and records three albums. Platinum and gold plaques have come and gone, the year is 2001, He leaves the project to persue other musical options.
As a sideman (drums/ perc. /vocal) credits include: Cypress Hill/ DJ Muggs (Soul Assassins), Martin Sexton, MC Rai, John Zorn, Eminem, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Mobb Deep, Obie Trice, Zora Young, Avenged Sevenfold, The Transplants, Everlast (House of Pain), Zayra Alvarez, Ana Sidel, Vixtrola, Screaming Headless Torsos (group member 87-89), SABAN Entertainment TV, Matt Salizar, Mudrock and Belowme Productions.
Currently residing in Los Angeles, Al spends his time writing music, playing with Sony Latin artist Zayra Alvarez, MC Rai and teaching at Sonic Albonic Music, his private recording and teaching facility. Recently appointed Head of Percussion Dept. at The M. Gray Music Academy founded by Grammy winning artist Macy Gray located in North Hollywood, Ca., Al will also be teaching ensemble and private classes.
