Atreyu's Brandon Saller has a tough time describing his drumming style, but it's not for lack of trying. "I sat down and tried to figure out who I like, who I play like," he says, "and I haven't been able to put my finger on it. I just wanted to play hard and fast." That he does, and as Atreyu's drummer/songwriter he has played a key role in the band's success. With more than a million CD's sold since the Orange County band formed in 1997, Atreyu has led metal into unforseen directions, especially on their latest Hollywood Records release, "Lead Sails Paper Anchor."
"We all have different musical backgrounds," Brandon adds. "I love metal, heavy rock, hip-hop, pop. All those things meld together." In addition to the full spectrum of Zildjian cymbals, Brandon also plays Truth custom drums and uses DW hardware and Vic Firth sticks. But the best gear in the world is no replacement for a fertile musical imagination. Says Brandon, "Each record has been pushed harder and harder. Every time we record, we ask ourselves what haven't we done that we want to to. What song haven't we written yet?"
Brandon has also written some solo material which he describes as "a slightly darker, classic Americana style of rock with some foo fighter moments." You can go to his Myspace page and listen for yourself.
