David Smith is Professor of Percussion at Western Connecticut State University and Principal Percussionist with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Smith has performed with several other orchestras and has given many solo percussion recitals throughout Connecticut and New York. He has performed several World Premiers including two compositions by Milton Babbitt; "Beaten Paths" for Solo Marimba and "Homily" for solo snare drum at the Percussive Arts Society International Conference.
This spring Mr. Smith premiered the duo version (piano and vibraphone/marimba) of Arthur Lipner's "Hybridisation". This fall will see the release of the Duo CD, "Dual Excursions" (flute and percussion duo). In May 2004 he was the xylophone soloist with the WCSU Wind Ensemble conducted by Keith Bryan(New Sousa Band). It was a re-enactment of a Sousa concert which Keith Bryan does so well. He has recorded on CRI and Desto Records and has performed with the Paul Whiteman Band with conductor Maurice Peress.
Mr. Smith is an active clinician giving clinics at Connecticut Music Educators Association conferences, New York State School Music Association conferences, Connecticut State Chapter of Percussive Arts Society Day's of Percussion and many school programs throughout Connecticut.
