Jonathan Wacker is currently on the faculty of the School of Music at East Carolina University. Prior to this, he has been a faculty member at Indiana University, Armstrong Atlantic State University and the University of Nevada-Reno. Wacker has degrees from Indiana U. (DM), U. of Nevada-Reno (MM) and North Texas State U. (BM). His teachers include Robert Schietroma, Dom Moio, Walfredo Reyes, Anthony Cirone and Henry Okstel.
As a performer, Jonathan Wacker has extensive experience in a wide variety of musical genres. Beginning his career in 1980 in the Reno/Lake Tahoe area, he worked as a percussionist/drummer on the house orchestras of most of the area's casinos. In that capacity he was called upon to play everything from drumset to timpani to melodic percussion, behind entertainers such as Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, John Denver, The Smothers Brothers, Dionne Warwick and many others.
Wacker admits to having a strong interest in orchestral percussion as well as the more commercial areas. He has performed with the Reno Philharmonic, the Charleston Symphony, Savannah Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and more, on timpani and in the percussion section. Additionally, he has published a variety of articles concerning interpretation of orchestral percussion and audition preparation in Percussive Notes.
As a jazz drummer, Wacker has performed or recorded with artists including Bobby Shew, Carl Fontana, Bob Berg, Arturo Sandoval, Milt Hinton, Diane Schur, the Dominic Spera Big Band and the Savannah Jazz Orchestra. Wacker is a frequent clinician in the areas of jazz and show drumming.
