Michael A. Werner joined the Seattle Symphony Orchestra as Principal Percussionist in 2009. He was previously with the Metropolitan Opera since 1996. Werner has also served as percussionist with the The Metropolitan Opera Chamber Ensemble, The Metropolitan Opera Percussion Ensemble and the Santa Barbara International Percussion Festival. He previously served as principal percussionist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Canton Symphony Orchestra (Ohio), Pennfield Symphony Orchestra, National Repertory Orchestra (Colo.), and has served as substitute principal percussionist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
Werner studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Eastman School of Music, Cleveland State University, Music Academy of the West, Duquesne University School of Music and the Aspen Music School. He has studied under the following teachers and coaches: John Beck, Thomas Freer, Don Liuzzi, Richard Weiner and Paul Yancich.
Werner currently serves on the percussion faculty at the Music Academy of the West. He has served as a clinician for the Percussive Arts Society, and as an instructor with the New World Symphony and Oberlin Percussion Institute. He also serves as an artist and clinician for Pearl Percussion and Zildjian.
