Rubén Zúñiga is a native of Santiago, Chile. He is currently a member of São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Percoso Ensemble (dedicated to contemporary music), Escualo Ensemble (dedicated to tango music), Martelo Percussion Quartet and Percussion teacher at Bacarelli Institute.
Rubén has played in most of the principal halls such as Concertgebouw, Royal Albert Hall, Berliner Philharmonie, Salle Pleyel-Paris, Konzerthaus in Viena, Tonhalle-Zurich, Brucknerhaus, Festspielhaus of Salzburg, Victory Hall, among others. Prior to joining SPSO, he served as a Principal Percussionist of Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra (Brazil) for 2 years, Percussion/Assistant Timpani of Concepción Symphony Orchestra (Chile) for 2 years and Timpani/Percussion of the National Youth Symphony Orchestra of Chile for 4 years. He has also played as an extra musician with Symphony Orchestra of Chile and Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie.
He studied percussion at the University of Chile and attended the Alan Abel Percussion Seminar at Temple University. His main teachers were Patrício Hernández (University of Chile), Mario Baeza (University of Chile) and Tom Freer (The Cleveland Orchestra) and took private lessons with Christopher Lamb (The New York Philharmonic), Markus Rhoten (The New York Philharmonic), Wieland Welzel (The Berlin Philharmonic) and Raymond Curfs (Das Orchester-Bayerischer Rundfunk). Rubén also participated in master classes held by Timothy Adams Jr (Georgia University), She-e Wu (Northwestern University), Mark Ford (North of Texas University), Don Liuzzi (The Philadelphia Orchestra), Alan Bor (Israel Philharmonic Orchestra), Mark Brafhart (Concertgebow Orchestra), Randy Max (Rotterdam Orchestra) and others.
Rubén has performed in the BBC Proms, Campos do Jordão International Festival, Contemporary Music Festivals of Cuba, Chile, Brazil and Argentina, Snape Proms, Rheingau Musik Festival, The Rest is Noise Festival-London, Dublin-Ireland and others.
As a soloist, he has played with Concepción Symphony Orchestra (Chile), Ouro Preto Orchestra (Brazil) and Orquestra Experimental de Repertório (Brazil).
As an active clinician, Rubén has taught clinics and master classes in the University of Chile, University of La Serena, Boston Conservatory, São Paulo State University, São Paulo University, Campinas University, Minas Gerais Federal University, Latin-American Percussion Festivals, , among others.
