2010 Kilamanjaro

Sound Driver Plays From the Top of Mt. Kilimanjaro for Charity with Help From Zildjian

The summit of MOUNT KILIMANJARO was the setting for an audacious world record attempt in aid of the Smile Train charity on Monday 22nd February 2010.

Sound Driver, a 5-piece band from the UK and Ireland, successfully played a live concert at 19,341ft (5,895m) on the top of the volcanic mountain of Kilimanjaro in aid of the cleft palate charity and, by doing so, set a new World Record for the Highest Altitude Electrically Powered Rock Gig. There has never been a powered musical performance at anything close to the height of Mount Kilimanjaro and there has never been a rock concert on top of a volcano.

The gig was recorded live at the summit by leading record producer Danton Supple (Coldplay, Kylie Minogue, Pet Shop Boys and Spandau Ballet), after the band and its crew personally lugged all their equipment over seven days to the top of Africa's highest peak. Leading cameramen Mark McCauley and Fred Scott where also there to record the event live and to send back daily updates to the tour's dedicated website

The band carried 148.95kg of equipment including instruments that were donated by Fender, Roland and Traps Drums. Drummer, Jon Howells, used lightweight A Custom Zildjian cymbals for the world record achievement. Further accessories for the band were provided by ACS custom moulds, Promark sticks, Ernie Ball strings and George L's guitar cables.

The driving force behind this tour is to raise money and awareness for Smile Train, a charity dedicated to providing free cleft surgery for millions of children in developing countries, and also in providing cleft-related training for the doctors and medical professionals who carry out these operations. Over the last ten years Smile Train has provided 500,000+ free surgeries for children and has helped in 77 of the world's poorest countries.

Harnessing the resources and reach of the global travel industry, along the with the support of the music industry, Sound Driver are now looking forward to taking their song to an even bigger international audience and raising awareness and further funds to help Smile Train carry on changing the world one smile at a time. The band will go on to travel to the Middle East, North Asia and USA, with various European dates being added all the time.

This remarkable initiative is spearheaded by key sponsor and long time supporter of Smile Train, Patron Spirits, a leading producer of premium tequila and by the Abu Dhabi Airport Corporation, the management company for the rapidly expanding airport facility in the United Arab Emirates' capital.
