For the first time, the German record industry presented an Echo Award for jazz. In the past, the Echo Awards were monopolized by pop and classical music, but on May 5, 2010, the Jazz Award was presented to The Vijay Iyer Trio, with Stephan Crump on bass, Zildjian artist Marcus Gilmore on drums and bandleader Vijay Iyer on piano. The bands album Historicity was released last fall and was hailed by music critics in the US and abroad as the best jazz CD of 2009. This win was very special, not only because it is the first award of its kind, but because the band was selected by an expert jury as well as the public, as reflected in record and download sales. "It's nice to know that there is both a critical embrace and an audience embrace sort of working together," said Iyer.
