Conor Guilfoyle Artist Image

Zildjian Welcomes Conor Guilfoyle (Ireland) to its Family of Worldwide Artists

Independent Jazz Artist

Zildjian is delighted to welcome Conor Guilfoyle, based in Dublin, Ireland, to our family of Worldwide Artists.

Conor began playing drums at the age of 13 years, by the time he was 17 years old, he was working with many of the leading players on the Irish Jazz scene.

Conor then went on to study at Drummers Collective in New York before winning a scholarship to the prestigious Jazz programme at the Banff College of Fine Arts in Canada, directed by bassist David Holland.

On his return to Ireland, Conor quickly established himself as one of the most in demand drummers in Europe. His extensive playing and recording credits include guitarists: John Abercrombie and Larry Coryell, saxophonists: David Liebman, Sonny Fortune, Pat la Barbara, Ronnie Cuber, Joe Lovano and pianists: Kenny Werner, Jim McNeilly, Mark Levine, Mal Waldron, John Taylor and Enrico Pierranunzi.

Today Conor is a member of several groups including the innovative Guilfoyle/Neilsen trio, which has received worldwide acclaim for its use of complex metric systems applied to standard material as well as open textures.

Conor's studies with the late Frank Malabe in New York gave Conor a love of Afro-Cuban music and he directs the groups, Havana Son and Jazz Conclave. He has also toured with Cuban trumpeter Bobby Carcasses and Pucho and his Latin Soul Brothers.

As an educator, Conor has been expanding the rhythmic language of jazz with his application of odd metres to the standard jazz repertoire and the use of the Afro Cuban concept of clave applied to different time signatures. These innovations have led to an international demand for his teaching and he has lectured in many of the leading colleges worldwide including:

Berklee College of Music, Boston, USA
The New School in New York, USA
Tufts University in Massachusetts, USA
Drummers Collective in New York, USA
The Royal Conservatory, Hague, Holland
The Bruckner Conservatory Graz, Austria
The Rhythmic School, Copenhagen, Denmark
The American School of Jazz, Paris, France
Folkhogskola Skurups, Sweden
Lucerne School of Jazz, Switzerland

He is currently the Director of the XMusic Academy in Dublin, Ireland.

Conor is the Author of two books: Odd Meter Clave for Drumset and Rhythmic Reading For Drummers, both published by Advance Music.

Conor's cymbal set-up is:

14" K Con Hats
20" K Con Medium Thin Low
22" K Con Bounce Ride
18" K Con thin crash
He says, "I have owned and used old K's for years, for me they are the history and sound of the music. When I tried the new K Constantinople Bounce Ride I was stunned at how a new cymbal could not only sound just like old K's, but feel like one too."
