Rod began playing drums at the age of 8, when his music-loving parents bought him a snare drum for Christmas, he got his first kit two years later, joined his first band at 15 years old and was in the lucky position of turning professional at just 18 years old. Eventually have done the circuits of Ireland Rod moved to London and studied a while with Lloyd Ryan, after which he toured with Hazel O’Connor and worked with Roger Daltry (of The Who). He later joined 2 Tribes, recorded a couple of albums and toured extensively across the UK/Europe, somehow finding the time to fit in various session work along the way.
After the demise of 2 Tribes he joined Boston’s Fledgling and moved to the USA for a couple of years. They signed to TVT records in New York, and recorded an album with producer Chris Sheldon at the legendary Long View Farm Studios in Massachusetts. Fledgling disbanded after 2 years and Rod decided to return to Dublin.
Since returning to Ireland Rod has established himself as one of the country’s most in-demand freelance players, working with artists as diverse as; Ronan Keating, Damien Dempsey, Brian Kennedy, Mary Black (with whom he recorded the multi-platinum selling album Speaking with the Angel), Albert Niland, Eoin Coughlan, The Vard sisters, Celtic Tenors, Tommy Fleming (Contender album / Platinum sales), Rebecca Storm, Cara Dylan and Marc Roberts. Rod has also worked on various movies including:

16" or 17" A Custom Crash
8" or 10" A Custom Splash
20" K Custom Hybrid Ride
17" or 18" A Custom Crash
18" A Custom China or 19" K Custom dark China
Rod says “My favourite cymbal has to be the 20" K Custom Hybrid Ride. I've used it in a variety of situations and it works beautifully every time. If I ever had to do a gig with only one cymbal, it would definitely be this one. For general ride work, crashes, swells, jazz, 4' on the bell ,etc etc, it does it all!"
