Hollywood, CA, November 2010.... Award-winning songwriter and composer Jack Conrad has a new addition to his studio, in the form of Gen16's Digital Vault.
Conrad, who began his career as a session bassist more than three decades earlier, has penned hits for artists as varied as Heart, Three Dog Night, John Waite, Reba McIntyre, Johnny Halliday, Marco Borsato and Lucie Silvas. A recipient of Cleo, ASCAP and BMI awards, his tracks have appeared in films starring Robert DiNero and Arnold Schwarzenegger, along with cult classics like Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Monkey Hustle.Ê
"I can remember, with the early cymbal samples, we'd dump a ton of echo on them to try and make them last just a little longer, but we still weren't fooling anyone," says Conrad. "Now, the quality of samples has dramatically improved. but cymbals have traditionally lagged behind. For a long time we'd overdub real cymbals, just because there weren't any samples that were convincing enough."
Conrad points to the new Digital Vault sample libraries as a turning point. "The Gen16 stuff takes things to a whole new level. The cymbals are so good to begin with, and you can do so much with them. It's something that's been needed for a long, long time."
Conrad has shown the Digital Vault to several of his regular session drummers, and says they've all been more than impressed. "All the drummers I've ever worked with, their dream of dying and going to heaven included visiting the Zildjian vault to pick out their own cymbals. This is really a big deal."
