The air was warm and dry as we arrived in Austin, TX (a big contrast to the cold we left behind in New England) for the 25th annual South By South West Music Festival. We had just landed in the live music capital of the world! Massive crowds waited in lines for hours just to grab a glimpse of their favorite band performing at one of the many venues and bars that line the streets of the city. After the long process of getting our badges, we started on our trek to Red 7 to check out some great hardcore bands like Miss May I (Jerod Boyd), iwrestledabearonce, and other up-and-coming bands. We continued to the MTV Garage and found a line around the block to see Matt & Kim (Kim Schifino) who practically brought down the parking garage - literally. We shot over to the Auditorium Shores Stage to check out The Strokes (Fab Moretti). The music went late into the night with acts like John Popper (Mark Clark), Emmure (Mike Kaabe), and many others.
Day 2 was mostly a hardcore metal day. We checked out acts like Acacia Strain (Kevin Boutot) and Miss May I, who performed under our very own Zildjian banner. We got a break from the metal scene and checked out Rusty Spurs for more great bands. That night, as people started crowding the streets, we checked out the oldest hotel in Austin, The Driskill, where we saw Crystal Bowersox and John Popper who played an amazing set together.
The final day started with a long walk in the hot sun to check out an amazing performance by Neon Trees (Elaine Bradley) at Waterloo Records. After that, we checked out The Tap Room at Six to see Eliza Doolittle belting out some amazing songs while Dexter Hercules kept the beat.
The 85 degree weather and clear skies of Austin, TX created a perfect backdrop for an unforgettable event that’s a must see for anyone who loves music.
