Grammy Awards 2012

Zildjian at the 2012 Grammy Awards

Zildjian drummers leave their mark at the 54th Grammy Awards

Once again, all eyes were on Los Angeles last Sunday night as Music’s biggest night, the 2012 Grammy Awards were kicked off by Bruce Springsteen with Max Weinberg on drums. No stranger to the Grammy’s in either performance or awards, Bruce got the crowd to their feet and you could feel the anticipation of what was yet to come! While the mood in the house was both solemn and celebratory, the feeling was that this year’s Grammy Awards had something for everyone.

This year’s show was rife with collaborative performances, carefully chosen and choreographed so that there was never a dull moment. Among the standout collaborations were Coldplay (Will Champion) with Rhianna, Maroon 5 (Matt Flynn) as part of a medley with the Beach Boys (John Cowsill). The Band Perry (Boone Daughdrill) and Blake Shelton (Tracey Broussard) were part of a moving tribute to the legendary and now Lifetime Achievement Award winner Glen Campbell and Harold Jones was seen performing with Tony Bennett as part of a duet with Carrie Underwood.

Known for her amazing, theatrical live performances, Katy Perry (Adam Marcello), once again didn’t disappoint. Smoke, lights, back up dancers and lasers were just part of the visual as she started off with her single “E.T.” then segued into “Part of Me” which had many people wondering if there wasn’t a not so hidden message in the lyrics.

The energy that Foo Fighters, multiple nominees for the evening, brought to the event couldn’t be contained within the walls of the Staples Center so sadly those inside the venue had to be content with watching on giant screens what was happening outside as the band rocked the outdoor stage performing both “Walk” and later in the telecast “Rope”. Dave Grohl would later give one of the more memorable acceptance speeches of the night as he reminded everyone about the importance of the “human element” in making music. Members of the audience nodded, cheered and were on their feet in agreement!

The night belonged to Adele, who won everyone over with her talent and graciousness as she swept all the categories in which she was nominated. Her moving performance was perhaps the most talked about of the evening. As you were making your way out of the venue, you could hear everyone talking about how amazed and impressed they were.

The death of Whitney Houston was talked about by all.. audience members, performers, nominees and winners. The sense of loss of another great Artist before her time was palpable and the feeling was that everyone was turning to music for its healing powers. At the end of it all, a legend was honored Sunday night at Staples Center and maybe another one was made. Only time will tell.
