Sonny Igoe was a dear friend and longtime artist, and all of us at Zildjian are deeply saddened by his passing. We extend our deepest condolences to Tommy Igoe and his family, and all of Sonny's friends and family. A noted jazz drummer, educator, and Modern Drummer Advisory Board member Sonny passed away, at age eighty-eight.
Born in New Jersey he began playing drums at an early age. When he was sixteen he won the Gene Krupa drum contest in its first East Coast incarnation. Sonny went on to play with Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, and Charlie Ventura, among other artists. As he turned his attention to teaching, he kept recording and performing, and in the 1980s he led a big band along with saxophonist Dick Meldonian.
His son Tommy, a celebrated jazz drummer and educator himself, had this to say of his father’s passing. “He lived a wonderful, long life and we were grateful to have him as long as we did. Let's all play the Lifetime Warmup in his honor!”
