The evening of the 21st of August saw session ace Dave Mattacks perform one of his highly anticipated “Master Classes” for Gary Marshall and 65 of his students and local drummers. The event started with Dave explaining that rather than listen to drum solos for up to 30 minutes, proceeded by any questions, that he would set about on helping all that attended with his vast experience of live performances, recording sessions and the music business as a whole.
We were in for a treat! Dave talked with the crowd about obtaining sounds from the drum set, a musical balance; tuning and the use of good quality Evans drum heads. Following on from this, explaining about recording sessions for artists such as XTC, Super Genius, Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention and Elton John (after playing the recorded CD tracks of certain songs), Dave demonstrated drum parts and techniques for those recorded tracks and explained in meticulous detail how students might benefit from the use of the microphones, drums, tuning, drum heads, sticks, beaters, mallets, hot rods, the room etc. However the real eye opener was from detailed analysis of what producers, Gus Dudgeon and Glynn Johns required of Dave whilst working on many sessions over the years.
All in all, a real treasure trove of wisdom displayed by Dave Mattacks. To finish off, Dave had taken the students through some of his personal exercises on a sheet that was handed out to every drummer attending, including Information regarding the following products, (Evans drum heads tuning guide, Evans sticker, Pro-Mark sticks and accessories, Puresound snare wires, Real Feel (HQ) practice pads, Protection Racket cases, Classic Drummer, Hudson and Zildjian cymbals). Evans, Pro-Mark and Zildjian banners were also displayed alongside the drum kit which featured said products for students to hear and evaluate.
A very successful event overall and many thanks from Dave and Gary for the support and attention of Zildjian Cymbals, D’Addario, Protection Racket, Classic Drummer, Hudson.
