A New Murder Mystery Revolves Around a Stolen Iconic Percussion Instrument

A polyrhythmic journey into the search leads to a world of drums and the Zildjian drummers who played them.

“Not since Dashiell Hammett’s Maltese Falcon  has an object of desire caused so much trouble.” –Craigie Zildjian

DANGEROUS ILLUSIONS is the title of a new Manhattan murder mystery that revolves around the theft of an iconic percussion instrument, an Oyster Black Pearl drum set with Avedis Zildjian cymbals made famous on February 9, 1964 during its debut appearance with The Beatles in America. A number of rare cymbals from the Zildjian family vault, some of them dating back to 17th-century Constantinople, were also stolen during the daring heist.

“Dangerous Illusions is a literary whodunit with a twist—solving it depends on figuring out who stole the iconic Ludwigs Ringo played on the Ed Sullivan Show.” – Drum Magazine

In this weeklong polyrhythmic journey into New York, the search for the stolen object leads into a world of drums and the pantheon of Zildjian drummers who played them, stopping along the way at a notorious shop on Music Row just east of Hell’s Kitchen, a Second Empire carriage house filled with percussion instruments originating in distant times and distant places, and the vast private showroom of an enigmatic dealer south of Houston in Hell’s Hundred Acres.

“Capturing percussive instruments’ luster and mystique, Joseph J. Gabriele’s insightful description and attention to detail echo a true drummer’s and drum aficionado’s passion. Sexy and spellbinding this well-developed mystery hooks you in fast and the four-on-the-floor pace will keep you turning pages faster than a Buddy Rich drum solo.”—Heather Smith, Managing Editor, Drumhead Magazine
Written by novelist (and drummer) Joseph J. Gabriele, Dangerous Illusions is a tribute to percussion—the artists, the instruments they played, and the inventors and craftsmen that created and perfected the instruments. Gabriele spent more than seven years researching and writing the novel.

The Avedis Zildjian Company and Atreus Books would like every drummer and percussionist worldwide, along with everyone who loves drums and drummers, to have the chance to experience Dangerous Illusions at a celebratory price on Amazon and other ebook retailers in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the iconic percussion instrument’s debut appearance in America, and in gratitude to Ringo Starr and the many Zildjian Artists who have brought such extraordinary music to the world.
