There are signs all over that we are rapidly approaching the end of yet another summer, the days are slowly getting shorter, kids are getting ready to head back school, baseball is the midst of the pennant race. Traditionally one of the biggest signs that summer is ending is the arrival of finals week for Drum Corps International (DCI).

After 10 weeks of grueling rehearsing, touring, and performing these fine young musicians and performers all congregate in the same spot for one last shot at becoming the World Champion. This year the Northeast was that spot, Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Ma.

It was an exciting week starting Tuesday, August 9th with the Division II and III corps starting their competition at Marciano Stadium in Brockton Ma. The top Division II corps was the Raiders with a score of 88.8, and toping the Division III was The Spartans with Zildjian Educational Artist Charlie Poole as the Percussion Caption Head.

Starting Thursday night August 11th the big boys took the field jockeying for position for semi-finals. It was a long day of competition that saw the top 25 Division I corps compete for the right to move into the semi-finals as one of the top 17. Coming out on top of Quarter Finals were The Cadets (Zildjian), followed by The Cavaliers (Zildjian), Phantom Regiment (Zildjian), the Blue Devils (Zildjian), and rounding out the top 5 with the Madison Scouts (Zildjian).

Moving into Friday with the top 17 corps now competing to make the Top 12 and appear in the Final performance to be held on Saturday night. It was very stiff competition and again the top 5 were in the same spot as the night pervious with the addition of the Blue Coats in a tie for 5th place with Madison. The scores were getting closer and now only .75 points separated the top 2 drum corps going into Finals.

The day had finally arrived, Saturday August 13, the last day of the season. Just like game 7 of the World Series, the Super Bowl, this is it, no more tomorrow, no more practices, it's time to show up and perform and leave it all on the field. At 6:45 PM the first corps took the field for competition, Spirit from JSU (Zildjian). The heat and humidity was almost unbearable for the some 25,000 plus fans packed into Gillette Stadium. But kids on the field didn't care this was it what they have worked all summer for, DCI FINALS.

As the night wore on the heat kept up and the corps got better with each performance. It was truly a great spectacle of musicianship and sportsmanship as these kids gave their all and left it out there on the field. But, after all 12 corps had performed it was all over except for the scores. And the winner is...

1 The Cadets 99.150

2 The Cavaliers 97.625
3 Phantom Regiment 96.825
4 Blue Devils 95.250
5 Bluecoats 94.450
6 Madison Scouts 92.625
7 Carolina Crown 90.725
8 Santa Clara Vanguard 88.650
9 Boston Crusaders 88.400
10 Blue Knights 88.225
11 Glassmen 87.700
12 Spirit from JSU 86.075

Congratulations to all!!

A special congratulation to The Cadets for winning the High Percussion award.

Zildjian sponsored corps again have lead the way with 11 out of the top 12 corps playing and endorsing our cymbals and we could not be more proud of them all. Especially the kids out there performing night in out.

If you were not able to attend the performance live you catch it again on ESPN 2 on September 6th, 2005 10:00 PM EST. During breaks look for a special spot from the Zildjian Company as we continue to promote and encourage this fantastic competition.
