Maxie Cheer

Kate Nash, Bimini, Charlieeeee, Just kids

Having made the move from my hometown of Kendal in Cumbria, I began my career in London at age 19 with no qualifications, connections or even a set of breakables. Over the last decade I have worked hard on my craft, building up the skills and equipment needed to work professionally, whilst playing hundreds of sessions and shows with artists of all genres. Some major highlights have included working with Tony Visconti, Mary Epworth, Poppy Ajudha, Bimini, Ellie Dixon, Kate Nash, Alex Kapranos, Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues and recording soundtracks for the BBC. I studied with drum heroes such as John Powney, Colin Woolway and Kay Rodriguez, became an educator myself, and went on a personal journey to arrive as the proudly trans+ musician I am today. I love all elements of being a drummer, and feel lucky to have began life with a love of music that has helped to keep me on a path of curiosity and excitement for performance ever since. Drumming has given me so much more than a job, it has brought me in to myself, my community and my purpose. I am excited to work with Zildjian and my other endorsement partners to further reach and inspire more drummers around the globe, particularly those who don't take the traditional route or who aren't used to seeing themselves represented on big stages.

  • WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

The people I work with are my greatest inspirations. Through collaboration I feel able to learn so much more about music than I ever could on my own, and I am pushed to achieve things I otherwise wouldn't even attempt. I think community is at the heart of all music making, and I am deeply grateful to have worked with and continue to work with so many inspiring musicians from all walks of life.

  • WORDS OF WISDOM FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF DRUMMERS

Quite often in my own career traditional routes to sucess weren't available to me, so I had to create something out of nothing and be creative with navigating the industry. Being open to doing things your own way, going against the grain, experimenting, trying things out, being the first.. this attitude will help to set you apart and lead you to where you want to be. My advice to the next generation of drummers, particularly those facing barriers of any kind, would be to embrace the things that appear to block or limit you; overcoming these barriers in your own unique way will be the very thing that attracts the right opportunities and people in to your life.
