I grew up wanting to beat on the drums, but never wanting to play them in a band. In high school, I played drums and sang in a band because we couldn't find another drummer. A year or so later, we did find a drummer, who was great. I switched to guitar and then learned how to really play the drums by watching him, and air drumming in the car. Flash forward to college, when I offered to play drums for a guitarist friend "for fun". I was a lot better than I had remembered, and we loved what we were doing, so we got a bassist and formed a band - I met the guys in Neon Trees through this band. And I have been stuck on the drums ever since!
