Jonathan Curry

Masego, Rapsody, Zoocrü, Independent

Born July 1, 1991 in Rahway, NJ, Jonathan started his musical career at the early age of eight months old, when he would bang on pots and pans. His parents quickly noticed his passion and pushed him toward it. He began playing drums in the church at 12 years old and by the time he was 16, he had decided to pursue music professionally. Jonathan joined the jazz and marching bands his senior year in high school and went on to study Jazz and Music Industry at North Carolina Central University. After moving to North Carolina, Jonathan has had the opportunity to play with artists such as Branford Marsalis, Christian Scott (Atunde Adjuah), Akuah Allrich, Marvin Sapp, Benny Golson, Rakim, Cyrus Chestnut, John Ellis and Kate McGarry just to name a few. Since graduating, Jonathan has traveled the world as a member of Masegos œTrap House Jazz band and has toured and made several Television appearances (including The Tonight Show featuring Jimmy Fallon) with North Carolinas own Rapsody and 9th Wonder. Most recently, Jonathan had the opportunity to compose and play drums on Nnenna Freelons latest album entitled Time Traveler, which was nominated for a Grammy for best vocal jazz album. He believes that music is a healing modality and that he must continue to use his artistic ability to be an inspiration to others.

  • WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I'm super inspired by the amazing musicians and drummers that have come before me and paved the way for Jazz and B.A.M. such as Tony Williams, Roy Haynes, and Elvin, but also by my peers and other younger musicians like Corey Fonville and Mike Mitchell. It's an energy thing!!

  • WORDS OF WISDOM FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF DRUMMERS

I think it's really important for young musicians and musicians in general to always remember that art/music is a labour of love. Never forget your influences and be sure to stay inspired!!!

  • FAVORITE ZILDJIAN CYMBAL/COMBO

Besides the Oriental Crash of Doom, I am absolutely in love with my stack which is a 10" A Custom EFX Splash stacked on top of a 10" Trashformer. The attack and lack of sustain is crazy. It cuts like a Katana and just feels good to play. I always keep it with me.
