Ralph Humphrey

The Odd Dogs, Adam Levy/Carey Frank Trio, Independent

My career started in the Bay Area. After graduating with a BA degree, I moved to Los Angeles to join the Don Ellis Big Band. From there, I joined Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. I had an association, both recording and on the road with Seals and Crofts, Al Jarreau, The Manhattan Transfer, Babaghanoush, The Outsidemen. I have taught privately and publicly, primarily at the Musicians Institute (1980-1996) and the Los Angeles College of Music (1996-present). I like music that is both good and challenging.

  • WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Good music is always inspiring, regardless of the style. If I had to pick one drummer who influenced me the most, it would be Tony Williams

  • WORDS OF WISDOM FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF DRUMMERS

Be sure that you are prepared for whatever comes your way. This means being diligent in your practicing and learning about your craft.

  • FAVORITE ZILDJIAN CYMBAL/COMBO

In most cases, I like 2 ride cymbals, one which can double as a crash, and 1 or 2 crash cymbals. For hi hats, I use 14" and 15" sizes, both K and A.
