Emory University, Col Legno Duo, Independent

Like many, I cut my teeth playing snare in marching band, but remember clearly when I truly fell in love with percussion: playing Harmonielehre by John Adams at age 15 in the NC Governor's School Orchestra. It's been a wild ride as a performer and educator ever since: Cincinnati and Rice for school, Quilombo Steel Quartet, Over-the-Rhine Steel Band, Buffalo Philharmonic, Air Force Concert Band, Attacca Percussion Group, Col Legno Duo (with bassoon), U.of Georgia, Emory U. And lots of freelance percussion work the past 10 years, which I love because I just about get to do it all. I'm most proud of founding the annual Emory Percussion Symposium, which allows me to work with a wide range of artists.

  • WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

One of my favorite things is to play bass drum and cymbals at the same time in the orchestra. I invert one 18" cymbal on a suspended stand (not too tight), angle it a bit, then crash with the right hand. One person can sound like two when you get the combo right.
